What's going on in the UK w the drivers and fuel thing

The government are claiming there's no shortage of fuel, while relaxing competition laws to allow collusion over stocks, bringing the army in to do deliveries to meet demand caused by panic buying they helped to create, and offering 10k 3 month visas to drivers across the EU to bail us out of a catastrophe of our own making.

They created the problem in the first place by putting so many rules in place about HGV drivers from abroad after Brexit.

The EU have the same driver shortage, we're the only ones affected by food and other supply issues because we've got an issue of cabotage on top of the driver problems.

Essentially EU drivers used to be able to deliver something here then easily pick up a delivery or two on the way back through. That's been made more complicated by systems put in place after Brexit, so it's not happening much, so less deliveries overall nationally.

In the EU cabotage is continuing as normal across the countries, so while the driver shortage is the same, we've got an increased burden we've put on ourselves

Our plan to get us out of a hole now is to bring in a bunch of EU drivers, have them pay to work here and suffer shit conditions and limited amenities, to dig us out of a hole we dug ourselves.

These visas will expire on Christmas. So it's "we're going to ALLOW you to come and save us, but you have to fuck off on Christmas day"

It's going about as well as you would expect with EU drivers associations.

The federation of Dutch Trade unions on the BBC this morning The EU workers we speak to will not go to the UK for a short-term visa to help the UK get out of the s*** they created for themselves”

The European Road Haulers Association “I expect many drivers will not return to the UK even if the UK government allows them to”

We've fucked it, lads. Properly royally fucked it.

This isn't just for fuel, though that's the one that's been turned into a crisis by bellends like this.

It's also food, clothes, toys, you name it. We're seeing shops with empty shelves more and more, people unable to get deliveries.

And not just because of HGVs. Treatment of smaller vehicle delivery drivers like 3.5 and 7.5t, low pay and absurd pressure means there's big struggles retaining those too.

Someone I know is in charge of distribution at a large depot for a big supermarket. They've been having trouble with getting drivers since before the pandemic. Now we have EU residents leaving, people going back to their normal jobs, and university students going back, the potential workforce is thinning while demand stays high.

And what are these companies not doing? Reducing pressure on drivers by giving them fair workloads, giving fair pay for the job they do, reasonable hours and actual contracts so they've got job security instead of having them as self employed.

@iconography Thank you for your report on UK backgrounds!

re: What's going on in the UK w the drivers and fuel thing

@thegibson yeah, though here it's illegal to use anything but certain containers, and can't store more than 30l at any time

Someone doing that would get tackled by half the forecourt

re: What's going on in the UK w the drivers and fuel thing

@iconography It's the same here.

and yet...

re: What's going on in the UK w the drivers and fuel thing

@thegibson oof. I kind of figured it wouldn't be, given how terrible America is with regulation

re: What's going on in the UK w the drivers and fuel thing

@iconography yeah, sometimes we have laws and regulations that are left over from when we were a functioning democracy, sadly the powers that be basically now classify that mode of functioning to the dreaded "socialism".

Free-market economies are a helluva drug.

@iconography this is just the toiletpaper thing all over again.

@maloki this guy, yes. Most people, not so much.

With this one the risk of scarcity from the panic puts livelihoods etc at perceived risk. People are naturally going to be concerned about their ability to get fuel to get to work, to hospital appointments, care for family etc. They know their ability is likely to be impeded for a while by increased demand, so it has a constant knock on effect.

It's a manufactured crisis

What's going on in the UK w the drivers and fuel thing

@iconography yeah, that's what I mean.
Which the other shortages were too.

Like I understand the panic, I do, I truly truly do. I just wish people would handle it better. You know?

@iconography looks like a white supremacy terrorist to me. I'm sure the police would like to track down bellend Bob, as it's illegal to store that much petrol at home, so he can only be filling his car for nefarious purposes...

@iconography why would the truck drivers /want/ to, when they have 27 other countries they can work in without a ton of hassle and hostile environment?

My first driving instructor used to drive HGVs and then was a depot safety supervisor and fleet manager afterwards - he told me himself he quit in his early middle age (about 30 years ago) as conditions were already getting bad thanks to Thatcho and ruthless competition..

@vfrmedia @iconography this just sounds like conditions fell below what UK workers would tolerate years ago but instead of things being improved the problem was masked by the availability of workers with lower expectations. Put the visa price on the employer and make sure it's high enough to cost more than decent facilities in the long run and things should improve?

@vfrmedia
There was daily news coverage in Spain last Xmas of the HGV drivers trapped in Dover, I can't imagine anyone in a rush to repeat that. It was like the UK didn't even realise that Xmas there is not the same day as Xmas here, why would you trust them again?
