All because the English language started out without the word 'fruit'. So it used 'apple' as a generic term.

So translating pre-'fruit' gives 'earth apple' for the French, after we borrowed 'fruit', it becomes 'earth fruit', and we start using apple to mean a specific type of fruit.

Isn't English grand (;*
